Adobe Illustrator Swatches

To import an ASE (Adobe Swatch Exchange) file, you need to click the hamburger menu in the top right corner of the Swatches panel and select 'Open Swatch Library,' followed by 'Other Library.' You can then navigate to the location of your saved ASE file and double-click it to load the colors. This is the best way to transfer a brand color palette between Illustrator and InDesign.

You can technically save both color modes in the same panel, but doing so can cause unexpected color shifts when you go to print. It is highly recommended to only use CMYK swatches when designing for print, and RGB swatches when designing for digital screens. You can easily convert individual swatches by double-clicking them and changing the color mode in the menu.

To create a perfectly accurate brand color, click the 'New Swatch' button at the bottom of the panel and manually type your 6-digit hex code into the color picker box. Uncheck the 'Global' box to prevent accidental edits, and name the swatch exactly as your brand guidelines dictate. This prevents designers from eyeballing colors using the color slider.

There is no technical limit to the number of pattern or gradient swatches you can save in a single Adobe Illustrator file. However, having thousands of complex vector patterns loaded into your swatches panel will drastically slow down the application's performance. It is best practice to save large pattern libraries as separate ASE files and load them only when needed.
