Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

The Naked Gun was adapted from the short-lived 1982 ABC television series "Police Squad!," created by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker. The show was cancelled after only six episodes despite critical acclaim.

Leslie Nielsen played Detective Frank Drebin, reprising his role from the original Police Squad! television series. Nielsen's deadpan delivery of absurd lines became the comedic signature of the entire franchise.

Three Naked Gun films were produced: the original in 1988, "The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear" in 1991, and "Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult" in 1994. All three starred Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin.

The first Naked Gun film was directed by David Zucker, who co-wrote the screenplay with the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker comedy team. Zucker was also part of the creative trio behind the landmark comedy "Airplane!" in 1980.
