Crossrail Tunnels

The Crossrail tunnels form the core underground segment of the Elizabeth line railway in London. The network consists of twin-bore passages stretching roughly 21 kilometers beneath central London. This massive infrastructure project was designed to drastically increase rail capacity in the city.

Construction involved the use of massive tunnel boring machines carving through the varied London geology. Eight custom-built tunnel boring machines were used to dig the underground passages. They had to carefully navigate around existing underground infrastructure like London Underground lines and utility pipes.

The tunnels connect major hub stations including Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, and Canary Wharf. These new underground stations were built to seamlessly integrate with the existing transport network. The line provides a fast east-west connection across the city.

The central section of the Elizabeth line, which utilizes the Crossrail Tunnels, officially opened to passengers in May 2022. The final stretches connecting the line end-to-end opened later in the same year. The project had been in planning and construction for well over a decade.
