Winchester Model 70

Pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifles feature a controlled-round feeding system where a massive claw extractor grips the cartridge rim as soon as it leaves the magazine. This mechanism ensures reliable feeding and extraction, even in harsh, muddy conditions. The Winchester Model 70 was officially introduced to the commercial market in 1936 by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. It quickly earned the nickname "The Rifleman's Rifle" due to its exceptional accuracy and smooth bolt action. It has gone through several manufacturing ownership changes but remains an iconic hunting firearm today.

While the Model 70 was initially offered in various chamberings, the 30-06 Springfield is the most historically iconic caliber associated with the rifle. It was also famously chambered in .270 Winchester, a cartridge popularized by legendary hunter Jack O'Connor. Modern iterations are available in everything from .243 Winchester to .375 H&H Magnum.

Today, the Winchester Model 70 is manufactured under license by FN Herstal in their Columbia, South Carolina facility. They acquired the rights and began producing the rifles to exacting standards, re-introducing the highly desired Pre-64 style controlled-round feed. These modern rifles are distributed globally through the Browning/Winchester network.
