Gir National Park

Gir National Park is located in the Junagadh district of the state of Gujarat in western India. It spans a vast area of dry deciduous forest and savanna landscape. The park is easily accessible from the nearby town of Sasan Gir.

Gir is globally significant as the last remaining natural habitat of the majestic Asiatic Lion. While the lions are the main attraction, the park also hosts a high density of leopards, as well as Indian deer species like chital and sambar. It provides a stark, beautiful contrast to the lush, wet forests typically found in Indian tiger reserves.

The best time to visit Gir National Park is during the cooler, drier winter months between December and March. During the scorching summer months of April and May, the heat is intense, but wildlife visibility is highest because animals gather around the few remaining water holes. The park is officially closed to tourists during the monsoon season from June to October.

To see the lions, visitors must book a guided Jeep safari through the official forest department website or authorized booking centers. The safaris are strictly regulated and are always accompanied by a local guide and driver who know the territories of the different lion prides. It is highly recommended to book your permits well in advance, as daily entry quotas fill up quickly.
