The 1971 debut album was produced by the legendary Thom Bell, who crafted the group's lush, orchestral Philadelphia soul sound. Bell was one of the architects of the Philly soul genre, working alongside Gamble and Huff. He also co-wrote many of the tracks on the album with his frequent collaborator, lyricist Linda Creed.

The album was released in 1971 on Avco Records, a label that initially specialized in comedy and film before moving into soul music. This partnership with Avco and producer Thom Bell turned the group into international stars. The label benefited massively from the sudden explosion of Philadelphia soul in the 1970s.

The breakout hit from the album is the track "You Are Everything," which showcased Russell Thompkins Jr.'s signature soaring falsetto. Other massive hits on the record include "Betcha by Golly, Wow" and "Stop, Look, Listen." These singles dominated the charts and defined the group's smooth, romantic sound.

The album is a quintessential example of the lush, string-heavy Philadelphia soul sound of the early 1970s. It blends classic doo-wop vocal group harmonies with sophisticated orchestral arrangements and funk-influenced basslines. This sophisticated style made it stand out from the grittier soul coming out of Memphis at the time.
