Joseph Glidden

description Joseph Glidden Overview

Joseph Glidden was an American farmer and inventor from DeKalb, Illinois, who revolutionized ranching in the American West with his barbed wire patent. In 1874, he developed an improved method for mass-producing barbed wire by twisting two strands of wire together to hold the barbs securely in place. This invention provided a cheap, reliable way to fence in livestock on the treeless Great Plains, effectively ending the era of free-roaming open ranges. Glidden established a manufacturing company to produce his wire, accumulating substantial wealth from the enterprise.
