The Dream Songs

The vast majority of the 385 poems feature a protagonist named Henry, who often speaks in a distinctly American, minstrel-show-inspired dialect. Henry serves as a deeply flawed alter ego for the poet, John Berryman, expressing his profound grief, guilt, and existential anxiety.

The 1969 volume combines Berryman's earlier books: "77 Dream Songs," which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1965, and "His Toy, His Dream, His Rest," which won the National Book Award in 1969. Together, they form one of the most significant American poetry collections of the 20th century.

Berryman structured the poems in a highly unconventional 18-line form divided into three six-line stanzas. The poems frequently shift wildly in tone, voice, and tense, blending high literary language with slang to create a uniquely jarring and musical rhythm.

The complete, 385-poem collection was published in 1969 by the prominent publishing house Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Berryman spent over a decade working on the sequence, cementing his place among the confessional poets of his era.
