description Heidentor, Carnuntum Overview
The Heidentor at Carnuntum is the surviving ruin of a Roman four-sided monument near Petronell-Carnuntum in Lower Austria. It was erected in the fourth century during the reign of Emperor Constantius II and is generally interpreted as a monumental arch or honorary structure. Four substantial piers supported a vaulted central form, creating the quadrifrons plan. The monument stands within the archaeological landscape of the former Roman settlement of Carnuntum.
