Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance

Gavi focuses specifically on helping provide new and underused vaccines to children living in the world's poorest countries. Eligibility is primarily determined by a country's gross national income (GNI) per capita, usually targeting nations below a specific economic threshold. As countries grow economically, they go through a transition to co-finance and eventually fully fund their own vaccine programs.

The Gavi Alliance is funded by a mix of sovereign governments, private philanthropies, and the private sector. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest private founding donors, alongside massive contributions from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Norway. They raise billions of dollars at periodic pledging conferences to fund immunization campaigns.

Gavi helps lower-income nations introduce vaccines against a wide array of deadly infectious diseases, including measles, polio, rotavirus, and pneumococcal disease. They also played a major role in distributing the COVAX initiative for COVID-19 vaccines globally. Their goal is to ensure that children in developing nations have the same access to modern vaccines as those in wealthy countries.
