Morgan Coulee Prairie State Natural Area

Morgan Coulee Prairie State Natural Area is in Wisconsin's Driftless Region. It protects a dry prairie remnant in a landscape that was not shaped by the last continental glaciers in the same way as much of Wisconsin.

The natural area protects one of the largest remaining dry prairie remnants in Wisconsin's Driftless Region. Dry prairie supports plants adapted to thin, well-drained soils and strong sun.

Dry prairie is a rare habitat that has been reduced by agriculture, development, and woody encroachment. Morgan Coulee preserves a substantial remnant of this plant community.

A coulee is a steep-sided valley or ravine, a landscape feature common in parts of the Driftless Region. Morgan Coulee Prairie takes its name from that local landform.
