Mitchell Grass Downs (Australia)

The Mitchell Grass Downs is a vast tropical savanna and tussock grassland ecoregion characterized by its heavy, cracking clay soils. These soils expand significantly when wet and fracture deeply during the dry season. This unique soil composition supports dense stands of Mitchell grass.

This ecoregion is located primarily in western Queensland and extends into the eastern edge of the Northern Territory. It forms a massive, continuous belt of natural grassland in the Australian interior. The landscape is relatively flat, making it highly suitable for extensive cattle grazing.

The region is heavily utilized for cattle grazing because the native Mitchell grasses are incredibly hardy and nutritious. The grass retains its nutritional value even after it dries out during the long dry season. This makes the area one of the most productive natural grazing regions in Australia.

The Mitchell Grass Downs experiences a semi-arid to arid tropical climate. It is defined by distinct, harsh wet and dry seasons, with highly unpredictable annual rainfall. The heavy clay soils are perfectly adapted to trapping the sporadic, heavy monsoonal rains that occur in the summer.
