Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano (abridged pamphlet)

The abridged pamphlet presents the story of Olaudah Equiano's life, including his kidnapping in West Africa and his survival of the Middle Passage. The original text also details his eventual purchase of his own freedom and life as a free man.

The original, full-length book titled "The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano" was published in 1789. It became a massive bestseller in England and was highly influential in the growing movement to abolish the transatlantic slave trade.

It is widely distributed and considered one of the earliest and most detailed first-hand accounts of the transatlantic slave trade from an enslaved person's perspective. His eloquent writing provided a devastating critique of slavery that galvanized abolitionists.

Equiano was able to purchase his freedom in 1766 while enslaved in the British colony of Virginia. He saved money by engaging in side trading during his time as a sailor, eventually gathering the forty pounds sterling required to buy himself.
