Euphorbia milii (Crown of Thorns)

The spiny Madagascan succulent shrub was reportedly associated with the crown of thorns worn by Jesus during his crucifixion. It is believed that a specimen may have been introduced to the Holy Land in ancient times.

The plant was named by botanist Baron Milius, who introduced it to France around 1821. Milius was a former governor of Réunion who brought many exotic plants back to the European horticultural market.

As a succulent adapted to warm, dry climates, this shrub can bloom nearly year-round if given enough sunlight. It produces colorful red or yellow flower-like structures called cyathia, which are technically modified leaves.

Because it is a succulent shrub, Euphorbia milii is highly drought-tolerant and requires very little water. Overwatering can easily lead to root rot, so it is best to let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
