Roy J. Plunkett was an American chemist who worked for the DuPont company during the 20th century. In 1938, he accidentally discovered polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a fluoropolymer that was later commercialized under the brand name Teflon. This discovery occurred while he was testing refrigerant gases, resulting in a remarkably non-reactive, non-stick substance.

He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his contributions to materials science.
