Guernsey Underground Hospital

The hospital was built by the Organisation Todt, a civil and military engineering group, using thousands of forced laborers during the German occupation of the Channel Islands. The workers, largely brought from occupied European nations, dug the massive tunnels by hand under brutal conditions.

The underground complex is located in the parish of Saint Andrew on the island of Guernsey. It was carved deep into the solid rock of the valley to protect wounded German soldiers from Allied air raids.

Although fully equipped to treat wounded soldiers, the hospital was never fully operational before the liberation of the Channel Islands in 1945. It stood mostly empty when the war ended and has since been converted into a historical museum.
