Wayang Beber Wonosari

Unlike the more famous shadow puppetry (wayang kulit), Wayang Beber Wonosari is centered on painted narrative scrolls. These illustrated sheets are physically unrolled by a performer to tell a story. It is a highly unique visual storytelling tradition preserved in the Wonosari area of Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta.

During a performance, a storyteller known as a dalang gradually unrolls the illustrated sheets while narrating the scenes. The dalang provides voices, sound effects, and musical accompaniment to bring the static images to life. This creates a cinematic, page-turning experience as the story progresses visually from panel to panel.

The narratives depicted on the traditional scrolls are drawn heavily from the Panji cycle of stories. The Panji tales are a collection of ancient Javanese romances and legends revolving around a legendary prince. These stories are deeply rooted in the cultural and historical heritage of the Yogyakarta region.

This specific wayang tradition is carefully preserved in the Wonosari area of Gunungkidul, which is part of the Yogyakarta Special Region in Indonesia. It is a highly localized art form maintained by a very small group of dedicated practitioners. The region actively works to protect these fragile historic scrolls.
