The Divan of Hafez

Collected in the Divan of Hafez, the lyric poetry of the fourteenth-century Persian poet centers on ghazals, with roughly 500 appearing in many editions. The precise contents vary between editions. Carefully patterned rhythms and intricate wordplay carry imagery of romantic longing and wine alongside ideas associated with Sufi mysticism, often leaving several readings open at once. The collection holds a central place in Persian literary culture and remains relevant beyond scholarly study.

In the tradition of fal-e Hafez, readers open the book to seek guidance through a poem, treating its language as a prompt for reflection on daily life. It suits readers drawn to layered lyric poetry and students of Persian culture or Middle Eastern history. Translation choices matter especially here, since rhythm and verbal ambiguity are difficult to carry fully into English.
