Escalator over the Hill – Carla Bley

Escalator Over the Hill is a 1971 triple-LP work that Bley described as a 'chronotransduction,' blending jazz, rock, classical, Indian music, and avant-garde theater into a sprawling operatic narrative. It is widely regarded as one of the most ambitious and uncategorizable works in 20th-century music.

The recording features a massive ensemble including Jack Bruce of Cream, Linda Ronstadt, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Gato Barbieri, Paul Motian, and Carla Bley herself. Producer Michael Mantler, Bley's then-husband, oversaw the project and contributed compositions.

The album was released on JCOA Records, the label associated with the Jazz Composers Orchestra Association founded by Carla Bley and Michael Mantler. The project was partly funded by grants and took several years to complete across multiple recording studios.

The work was recorded over a span of approximately three years, beginning around 1968 and concluding in 1971, with sessions taking place at studios in Europe and the United States. The extended timeline reflected the enormous logistical challenge of coordinating dozens of musicians across genres and continents.
