Lyapunov 12 Transcendental Études Op. 11

Lyapunov composed the collection between 1897 and 1905 specifically to honor the memory of Franz Liszt. He modeled his études directly after Liszt's own Transcendental Études, intending them as a continuation of that technical tradition.

Both sets consist of twelve extremely demanding pieces intended to push the technical limits of the pianist. However, Lyapunov's études often feature a distinctly Russian musical palette, incorporating folk-like elements and Orthodox bell sounds rather than Liszt's more central European Romanticism.

Yes, several of the études were dedicated to notable pianists of the era, including Ferruccio Busoni and Anton Rubinstein. These dedications acknowledged the virtuosic skill required to even approach the highly complex sheet music.

While paying homage to Liszt, Lyapunov did not strictly copy the key signatures of Liszt's final 1852 version for all twelve pieces. Instead, he created an independent cycle that explores parallel virtuosic challenges and dramatic tonal shifts.
