The Kingdom of Finland was a proposed constitutional monarchy created during Finland's political transition after the 1917 independence and 1918 Civil War. In October 1918, the Finnish Parliament elected Friedrich Karl, Prince of Hesse, as king, but he never took the throne; Germany's defeat in World War I undermined the arrangement, and he renounced the position in December. Finland adopted a republican constitution in 1919 and elected Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg as its first president.
