Volubilis

Volubilis is a partly excavated Roman city located in modern-day Morocco. It is situated near the city of Meknes and served as the capital of the kingdom of Mauretania Tingitana. The ruins sit on a fertile plain at the foot of the Zerhoun mountains.

The site contains several well-preserved structures dating primarily from the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE, including a prominent basilica and the Arch of Caracalla. Additionally, many of the ruined elite houses feature stunning, intact floor mosaics depicting classical myths. The Capitol is also one of the most visually striking structures remaining.

The Romans largely withdrew from Volubilis in the late 3rd century CE due to the empire's financial and military struggles. However, the city remained inhabited by local Berber and Christian communities for centuries afterward. It was finally abandoned in the 11th century.

Yes, Volubilis was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. It was recognized for its remarkably well-preserved ruins and its role as an important Roman frontier settlement. The site is heavily protected and is a major tourist destination in Morocco.
