description Zellij Overview

Zellij is a modern terminal multiplexer written in Rust, designed to provide a highly interactive experience. It features a unique layout system and a visible keybinding UI at the bottom of the screen, making it much easier for new users to learn than traditional tools. It supports complex layouts, session management, and seamless integration with various shell environments, offering a polished feel that aligns with modern terminal aesthetics.

help Zellij FAQ

Can Zellij restore a terminal workspace after a reboot?

Zellij supports session resurrection, which can restore the pane structure and commands from an exited session. It does not magically preserve the live memory of every program, so editors and other commands may need their own recovery features.

How are Zellij layouts different from tmux configuration files?

Zellij layouts use KDL files to describe tabs, split panes, commands, plugins, and reusable pane templates. A layout can be launched with the zellij --layout command or loaded into an existing session.

Does Zellij work on Windows as well as Linux and macOS?

Zellij was originally used primarily on Unix-like systems, but native Windows support arrived in the 0.44 release line. Windows users should check the requirements for their chosen terminal and shell before replacing a WSL-based setup.

Can Zellij use third-party plugins?

Yes. Zellij plugins are distributed as WebAssembly files and can be loaded from a layout, a keybinding, or the command line, while built-in components use addresses such as zellij:status-bar.
