Madurai Meenakshi Temple

The historic Madurai Meenakshi Temple, located on the banks of the Vaigai River in Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, an avatar of Parvati, and her consort Sundareshwarar, a form of Shiva. The complex serves as an outstanding example of Dravidian architecture.

The temple complex is famous for its towering gateway towers, known as Gopurams, which are elaborately carved with thousands of mythological figures. There are a total of fourteen Gopurams surrounding the complex, with the tallest southern tower reaching over 170 feet.

The Aayiram Kaal Mandapam, or Hall of Thousand Pillars, is a famous museum and structure within the temple complex built in 1569. It features intricately carved stone columns, each of which produces a different musical note when struck.

While the original temple is believed to date back to ancient times, the current architectural form of the Madurai Meenakshi Temple was largely built during the 17th century under the Nayak dynasty. King Thirumalai Nayak was particularly instrumental in expanding the complex during this period.
