La Niña de los Peines: Antología

The real name of the legendary flamenco singer known as La Niña de los Peines was Pastora Pavón Cruz. She was born in Seville, Spain, in 1890 and became one of the most influential figures in the history of flamenco. The anthology of her recordings captures her profound ability to master virtually every style of cante (flamenco singing).

She acquired her famous stage name, which translates to "The Girl of the Combs," at a very young age due to a specific lyric she sang. The song featured the line "péinate tú con mis peines" (comb yourself with my combs), and audiences began associating the catchy phrase directly with her. The nickname stuck, and she performed under this moniker for the entirety of her historic career.

The anthology features a vast array of traditional flamenco palos (styles), with a particular focus on cante jondo, the deeply expressive and solemn style of flamenco singing. It includes her masterful interpretations of styles like the peteneras, tangos, and bulerías, which she helped popularize. Her historical recordings in this collection showcase her unparalleled mastery of complex vocal ornamentation and rhythm.

The vast majority of the historical recordings found in the anthology were made during the early to mid-20th century, specifically between 1910 and 1950. She recorded extensively for record labels like Gramófono and La Voz de su Amo.
