"Tennessee Waltz" was written by country music artists Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart in 1946. They reportedly drafted the famous lyrics on a matchbox while traveling in their tour bus. The song draws heavily on the traditional country waltz style popular at the time.

Patti Page turned "Tennessee Waltz" into a massive crossover hit when she recorded it in 1950. Her version sold millions of copies and simultaneously topped both the pop and country charts. It eventually became one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Beyond its massive commercial success, the song helped establish Nashville and country music as a mainstream commercial force in the United States.
