Patsy O'Connell Sherman was an American chemist and inventor who worked for 3M. While investigating fluorochemical compounds in the 1950s, she and Samuel Smith discovered a treatment that could repel stains and oil from fabrics and other materials. Their work led to Scotchgard, a widely known 3M product line based on protective fluorochemical coatings.
