IC 4605

IC 4605 is a reflection nebula situated roughly 460 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Ophiuchus. It is a prominent feature of the larger Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, which is one of the closest stellar nurseries to our solar system.

Unlike emission nebulae that emit their own light, IC 4605 does not generate visible radiation itself. Instead, its dense clouds of cosmic dust scatter and reflect the blue and yellowish light of nearby hot stars, creating its distinct visual appearance.

Because it is a reflection nebula, IC 4605 is quite faint and difficult to observe visually with standard amateur equipment. Astrophotographers typically need long-exposure setups and dark skies to capture its subtle yellowish glow against the starfield.

IC 4605 is embedded within the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, placing it near several other famous astronomical objects. The bright star Antares in the constellation Scorpius, as well as the globular cluster M4, are located relatively close by in the night sky.
