Tomb of Sher Shah Suri

The tomb is located in Sasaram, in the Indian state of Bihar. It stands in the middle of a large artificial lake, giving it a striking island-like appearance reached by a causeway, and is considered one of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic funerary architecture in India.

Sher Shah Suri was a Pashtun emperor who founded the Sur Empire in northern India in 1540 after defeating the Mughal emperor Humayun. He is remembered for significant administrative reforms, including the introduction of the rupiya currency and improvements to the Grand Trunk Road, before his death in 1545.

The mausoleum was built in the mid-16th century, shortly after Sher Shah Suri's death in 1545. The structure reflects the architectural grandeur of the Sur Empire at its peak and was designed by the architect Mir Muhammad Ali Khan, who worked under Sher Shah's court.

The tomb is built in the Indo-Islamic architectural style, blending Pathan, Persian, and local Indian design elements. Its most distinctive feature is its placement on a plinth in the center of a square tank, with the main chamber topped by a large dome and surrounded by chhatris (pavilions), creating one of the most ambitious funerary designs of its era.
