description Blacktip Grouper Overview

Blacktip grouper is the common name for Epinephelus fasciatus, a marine ray-finned fish in the grouper family Serranidae. It lives in tropical parts of the Indo-Pacific and is also called the redbanded grouper or blacktip rockcod. Peter Forsskål first described the species in 1775 as Perca fasciata, and the dark tips on its spiny dorsal-fin membranes help distinguish it in field references. It is a reef-associated fish rather than a deep-sea species.
