Donald Osterbrock (1924–2007) was an American astronomer who served as the director of the Lick Observatory in California. He was a leading authority on the physics of gaseous nebulae and active galactic nuclei, notably authoring the standard reference textbook Astrophysics of Gaseous Nebulae and Active Galactic Nuclei. In his later career, he also became a prominent historian of science, writing detailed accounts of American astronomy and observatories.
