As Defence Secretary under his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa, he oversaw the 2009 military defeat of the LTTE. Facing mass protests during Sri Lanka's 2022 economic collapse and acute foreign-currency shortage, he fled to the Maldives and then Singapore, becoming the first Sri Lankan president to resign from office.
