Brownsnout Spookfish

description Brownsnout Spookfish Overview

The brownsnout spookfish is a mesopelagic deep-sea species belonging to the barreleye family Opisthoproctidae, first scientifically described in 1888. It is most notable for its highly unusual optical anatomy; it is the only known vertebrate to use both refractive lenses and reflective mirrors composed of guanine crystals to focus light. Its eyes are tubular and divided into two connected halves, allowing the fish to simultaneously look upward to spot prey silhouetted against the surface light and downward to detect bioluminescent flashes in the deep ocean.
