Early J-11 variants used Russian Saturn AL-31F turbofan engines, while later domestic models like the J-11B have transitioned toward Chinese-developed Shenyang WS-10 engines. The shift to domestic powerplants has been a major part of China's effort to reduce reliance on Russian components.

The J-16 is a multirole strike fighter developed from the J-11/Su-27 platform, optimized for both air-to-air and heavy air-to-ground missions with advanced avionics. The J-11 series focuses more on air superiority, while the J-16 expands the family's ground-attack and anti-ship capabilities.
