Bahauddin Zakariya Shrine

The shrine contains the tomb of Bahauddin Zakariya, an influential medieval scholar and saint associated with the Suhrawardiyya Sufi order. He established that order as a major spiritual presence in Multan during the 13th century.

Its design rises from a square brick base to an octagonal upper stage and a dome, with corner elements and blue glazed-tile decoration. This form became an important model for later funerary monuments across southern Punjab.

Much of the mausoleum was damaged during the British siege of Multan in 1848. It was subsequently reconstructed on its original foundations under the direction of the saint's descendants.

Shah Rukn-e-Alam was Bahauddin Zakariya's grandson and is buried in another celebrated Multan mausoleum roughly 500 metres away. The later tomb represents a further development of the regional architectural tradition seen at Zakariya's shrine.
