Last Judgment (Taddeo di Bartolo, Collegiata San Gimignano)

The fresco is located in the Collegiata, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, in San Gimignano, Tuscany. The Collegiata is one of the town's principal churches and is open to visitors, typically for a modest entrance fee.

The fresco was painted around 1393, placing it in the late medieval period. Taddeo di Bartolo was a Sienese painter whose work reflects the tradition of Sienese art associated with earlier masters like Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers.

Painted roughly 140 years before Michelangelo's Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel (completed 1541), Taddeo's version follows medieval conventions with detailed, hierarchical scenes of Hell and Paradise. Its particularly elaborate Hell scenes, organized around specific punishments, reflect a different theological and artistic era.

The Hell section is unusually detailed, depicting specific punishments inflicted on the damned and organized in a structured arrangement. This reflects late medieval theological ideas about sin and retribution, similar to the moral framework found in Dante's Divine Comedy, written in the early 14th century.
