Spartan Chess

description Spartan Chess Overview

Spartan Chess is an asymmetric chess variant created by Steven Streetman in which the standard white army faces a nonstandard Spartan army. The Spartan side has two kings, and its other pieces use movement rules that differ from orthodox chess; its pawn substitute, the hoplite, is based on the Berolina pawn and moves diagonally while capturing straight ahead. The two-king arrangement creates special check conditions, including duple-check when both kings are attacked at once. The result is an asymmetric fairy-chess game rather than a conventional two-army chess setup.
