No Longer Human (manga adaptation)

It is a manga adaptation of Osamu Dazai's classic 1948 Japanese literary novel, illustrated by renowned horror artist Junji Ito. It tells the story of Yozo Oba, a man who feels profound alienation from human society and masks his deep-seated dread with clowning and deception.

While the narrative remains highly faithful to Dazai's original text, Junji Ito applies his signature, highly detailed horror art style to the adaptation. This visual approach brings the protagonist's psychological torment and hallucinations to life in a uniquely terrifying way.

While it is a fictional novel, it is considered highly autobiographical and mirrors the tragic life of its author, Osamu Dazai. Dazai himself suffered from deep depression and alcoholism, and he ultimately died by suicide the year the novel was published in 1948.

Yozo Oba is the protagonist whose life is depicted through a series of notebooks discovered after his death. He is a deeply troubled individual who feels completely disconnected from humanity, maintaining a facade of buffoonery to survive in a society he cannot understand.
