Arch of Trajan, Benevento

The Arch of Trajan at Benevento was constructed around 114–117 AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan to commemorate his military and political achievements. It was built to mark the starting point of the Via Traiana, a new road providing an alternative to the older Via Appia for travel to Brundisium. The arch remains one of the best-preserved Roman triumphal arches.

The arch is covered in detailed relief panels depicting scenes from Trajan's reign, including his Dacian campaigns, religious sacrifices, and social welfare programs such as the alimenta, which provided food subsidies for Italian children. The reliefs on the city-facing side emphasize domestic policy, while the rural-facing side focuses on military and provincial affairs. The panels serve as a visual narrative of Trajan's governance.

The Via Traiana was a Roman road commissioned by Emperor Trajan as a faster and easier alternative to the Via Appia for travelers heading from Rome to the port of Brundisium (modern Brindisi). The Arch of Trajan at Benevento was erected at the point where the Via Traiana diverged from the Via Appia. The road was completed around 110 AD.
