Violet-crowned Woodnymph

Like most hummingbirds, this species feeds primarily on nectar from a variety of brightly colored, scented flowers. They also occasionally consume small insects and spiders to supplement their diet with essential proteins.

The species exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism; males are easily recognized by their brilliant violet throats and emerald green bellies, while females have plain green upperparts and dull greyish-white underparts. This allows birders to easily identify the sexes in the field.

This medium-sized hummingbird inhabits humid forests and woodland edges from southern Mexico through Central America down into northern South America. Their range extends through countries like Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

The female is solely responsible for building a small cup-shaped nest out of plant fibers and spider webs. She typically places this tiny nest on a low, protected horizontal branch in a forested area.
