Archimedes Palimpsest

description Archimedes Palimpsest Overview

The Archimedes Palimpsest is a medieval parchment manuscript whose original Greek mathematical texts were scraped and overwritten with a Christian prayer book. The underlying 10th-century copy preserves works by Archimedes, including the only surviving Greek text of The Method of Mechanical Theorems and important portions of Stomachion. Modern multispectral imaging has allowed scholars to recover writing that is invisible or difficult to read under ordinary light.

insights Ranking position

Archimedes Palimpsest ranks #7 of 243 in the Manuscript ranking, behind Shahnameh of Shah Tahmasp, ahead of Florentine Codex.

help Archimedes Palimpsest FAQ

How did Archimedes' writing become hidden inside a prayer book?

A scribe dismantled older parchment manuscripts, scraped or washed their text, and reused the sheets for a Christian prayer book in the 13th century. The erased 10th-century Greek writing remained faintly present beneath the newer text.

Which lost Archimedes work was recovered from the palimpsest?

The manuscript preserves the only surviving Greek copy of The Method of Mechanical Theorems. It also contains important text from Stomachion and On Floating Bodies.

How could researchers read text hidden under prayers and later paintings?

The conservation project used techniques including multispectral imaging and X-ray fluorescence. Different wavelengths and elemental signatures helped separate Archimedes' iron-based ink from the overlying prayer text and forged images.

Where is the Archimedes Palimpsest kept?

It was purchased by an anonymous private owner at a Christie's auction in 1998 and then placed with the Walters Art Museum for conservation and study. The resulting images and transcriptions were released for scholarly access.
