description Aldabra Lagoon Overview
A large, shallow lagoon lies inside Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, where coral limestone islands and narrow tidal passages shape an Indian Ocean ecosystem. The lagoon forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site with extensive reef habitats and diverse marine life. Aldabra's giant tortoises live on the surrounding land, making the atoll important for terrestrial conservation as well as marine research. The close relationship between tidal waters and island habitats is central to its scientific value.
Researchers study how species persist in an atoll environment and how its connected ecosystems respond to change. Aldabra suits the interests of biologists and conservation organizations more directly than conventional resort tourism. Its distinctive character comes from the integrity of the wider atoll system, including its large wild giant tortoise population.
