Armagh Cathedral

The cathedral described here is St Patrick's Roman Catholic Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Armagh. Armagh also has a separate Church of Ireland cathedral, so the denomination matters when searching for the building. ([Archdiocese of Armagh](https://www.armagharchdiocese.org/history-cathedral/))

Construction began after the foundation stone was laid on St Patrick's Day in 1840 and continued in stages until the cathedral was completed and consecrated in 1904. Work was interrupted during the nineteenth century, including the period of the Great Famine. ([Visit Armagh](https://visitarmagh.com/places-to-explore/saint-patricks-rc-cathedral/))

The cathedral is a Gothic Revival building with twin spires on a hill overlooking Armagh. Architect J. J. McCarthy became involved from 1854 and shaped much of the building's later design. ([Visit Armagh](https://visitarmagh.com/places-to-explore/saint-patricks-rc-cathedral/))

Armagh is the primatial seat of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland, and the cathedral serves the Archbishop of Armagh. Its location connects it with the city's long association with St Patrick and the ecclesiastical history of Ireland. ([Archdiocese of Armagh](https://www.armagharchdiocese.org/history-cathedral/))
