description BAE Systems CV90 Overview
Developed in Sweden and produced by BAE Systems Hägglunds, the CV90 is a family of tracked armored vehicles centered on the infantry fighting vehicle role. It carries mechanized infantry while providing protected mobility and direct fire support. Different variants use different weapons and protection packages, so the CV90 name refers to a platform family rather than one fixed configuration. Its tracked chassis and automotive design support movement across difficult terrain, while adaptable armor arrangements allow protection to reflect the needs of the operator.
The family also includes specialized versions serving roles beyond infantry transport. It suits armies seeking to integrate dismounted troops with armored maneuver and supporting fire. A defining distinction is the combination of troop-carrying capacity and turreted armament, which separates an infantry fighting vehicle from a transport-focused armored personnel carrier.
help BAE Systems CV90 FAQ
Which country designed the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle?
The CV90 was developed in Sweden by Hägglunds, now part of BAE Systems. It entered Swedish service in the 1990s and has since been exported to multiple European armies.
What weapons does the CV90 use?
Early Swedish CV90 variants are known for using a 40 mm Bofors cannon, while export versions can use different guns such as 30 mm or 35 mm cannons. The platform is modular, so armament varies by customer and variant.
Which countries operate the CV90?
Operators include Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Estonia, and others depending on variant and procurement. Ukraine has also received CV90 vehicles during the war with Russia.
What makes the CV90 different from a heavy APC like Namer?
The CV90 is an infantry fighting vehicle, so it balances troop transport with a turreted cannon and battlefield fire support. The Israeli Namer is a much heavier armored personnel carrier focused more on protection than on carrying a large autocannon turret.
