description BTGuard VPN Overview
BTGuard is an internet privacy service that combines a full-device VPN with a BitTorrent proxy. Its VPN supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, and PPTP, while the SOCKS5 proxy can be configured in BitTorrent clients to route torrent traffic and hide a user's IP address from peers and trackers. It is aimed at users who want encrypted general internet traffic, torrent-specific routing, or both. help BTGuard VPN FAQ
What protocols does BTGuard VPN support?
BTGuard VPN supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, and PPTP. WireGuard and OpenVPN are the more modern choices among those listed, while PPTP is an older protocol.
Does BTGuard include a BitTorrent proxy?
Yes. BTGuard combines a full-device VPN with a SOCKS5 proxy that can be configured inside compatible BitTorrent clients.
What does the BTGuard SOCKS5 proxy do?
The proxy routes configured BitTorrent traffic through a remote server so peers see the proxy’s IP address instead of the user’s direct address. It does not automatically protect every other application on the device, which is what the full VPN is for.
Is BTGuard VPN different from using only a torrent proxy?
Yes. The VPN can cover the device’s network traffic, while the SOCKS5 proxy is normally configured per application, such as a BitTorrent client. Users must configure the client correctly because a proxy setting alone does not guarantee that all traffic is routed through it.
