description Corky I Overview
Corky I was a female southern resident killer whale captured in British Columbia waters in 1969. She was kept at Marineland of the Pacific in California and was one of the early orcas displayed in captivity. Corky I is distinct from Corky II, another female killer whale captured later from the same general population and transferred to SeaWorld. Corky I died in 1978, several years before Corky II became widely known in marine parks.
help Corky I FAQ
Is Corky I the same whale as the SeaWorld orca called Corky?
No. Corky I was the earlier female kept at Marineland of the Pacific, while Corky II was captured at Pender Harbour in British Columbia in December 1969 and later moved to SeaWorld San Diego.
When was Corky I captured, and when did she die?
Records for the earlier Corky list her capture at Garden Bay, British Columbia, in April 1968 and her death at Marineland on December 5, 1970. The 1969 British Columbia capture belongs to Corky II, not Corky I. [Ceta-Base](https://cetabase.org/orcensus/hkw/marineland-pacific/)
Where was Corky I kept?
Corky I was held at Marineland of the Pacific in Palos Verdes, California. She was one of the early killer whales displayed by that oceanarium.
Why do orca records use Corky I and Corky II?
The name Corky was reused after the first female died in 1970. Corky II later became the better-known whale, moving from Marineland to SeaWorld San Diego in January 1987.
