Mauritania

description Mauritania Overview

Mauritania is a largely desert country in northwestern Africa, extending from the Atlantic coast across the Sahara to borders with Western Sahara, Algeria, Mali, and Senegal. The Senegal River forms much of its southern boundary and supports irrigated agriculture, while inland landscapes include dunes, rocky plateaus, and oases. Chinguetti and other caravan towns in the Adrar preserve Islamic scholarship, manuscript traditions, and trans-Saharan history, while Moorish Arab-Berber traditions remain prominent.
