description Oz: The Series Overview
Created by Tom Fontana, Oz premiered on HBO in 1997 and ran for six seasons. This American television drama takes place in the fictional Oswald State Correctional Facility, concentrating on an experimental prison unit called Emerald City. Inmates and staff share the narrative, so prison life emerges through competing interests rather than through the experience of a single central hero. Survival and gang loyalties shape daily interactions, while corruption and failures of authority complicate attempts at rehabilitation.
Its explicit violence and sexual content make it a demanding choice for adult audiences interested in institutional drama. Recognized as HBO's first hour-long original drama series, Oz helped establish a direction for the network's later dramatic programming. Within prison stories, its sustained ensemble format allows conflicts to develop across episodes and exposes the consequences of decisions made on both sides of the cell doors.
