description Rocket Girls Overview

When Yukari Morita decided to look for her missing father who disappeared in the South Seas, she had no idea how far her journey would take her. Just traveling to the Solomon Islands is a long way for a high school girl to go on her own, but then Yukari runs into an astronaut from the Solomon Space Association, which has been trying to build a rocket powerful enough launch a man into space. Upon meeting the petite Yukari, however, SSA director Nasuda realizes that she's small enough to go up in a less powerful rocket the SSA has already built! So he offers her a deal: if Yukari agrees to become their astronaut, the SSA will help find her missing father!

help Rocket Girls FAQ

What is Rocket Girls based on and when did it air?

It's a 2007 anime adapting the light novels by Housuke Nojiri, who is also known as the author behind Utawarerumono. The series ran for a single season of about 12 episodes.

Why is a high school girl going to the Solomon Islands?

Yukari Morita travels there searching for her father, who disappeared in the South Seas. She instead gets recruited by the Solomon Space Association, a local space program that launches its small rockets from an island in the archipelago.

Is it true her mother is in the story too?

Yes, along the way Yukari encounters a teenage-looking astronaut named Matsuri who turns out to be her mother, a former astronaut herself. That family twist is central to why Yukari ends up piloting for the program.

Why do the space suits look like swimsuits?

The in-story explanation is that the Solomon Space Association's tiny, lightweight rockets can't afford heavy conventional suits, so the crew wears minimal form-fitting gear. It's one of the show's most memorable visual gimmicks.
