Schiaparelli EDM

description Schiaparelli EDM Overview

Schiaparelli EDM (Entry, Descent and Landing Demonstrator Module) was a European Space Agency lander flown on the 2016 ExoMars program together with Russia's Roscosmos, and named for the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli. Launched in March 2016 alongside the Trace Gas Orbiter, it attempted to land at Meridiani Planum in October but crashed after a software fault triggered premature parachute release and thruster shutdown. Its descent telemetry nonetheless proved valuable for engineering the later ExoMars rover effort.

Schiaparelli EDM was the Entry, Descent and Landing Demonstrator Module in the 2016 ExoMars program. It was an ESA lander flown with Russia’s Roscosmos and named after astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli.

When was Schiaparelli launched?

The module launched in March 2016 alongside the Trace Gas Orbiter. Both spacecraft were part of the first mission in the ExoMars program.

What was Schiaparelli designed to demonstrate?

It was designed to test technologies for entering the Martian atmosphere, descending through it, and landing on the surface. It was a technology demonstrator rather than a long-term science rover.

Did Schiaparelli complete its Mars landing?

No. The lander lost contact during its descent and crashed on Mars in October 2016. The Trace Gas Orbiter, launched with it, continued as the successful orbital part of the mission.
